This remodel and addition of a mid-century ranch style home on a Bay Area hillside presented unique challenges and opportunities. Working closely with the homeowners we crafted a modern and functional space warmed by daylight and inspired by sweeping views.  The end result was a stunning blend of mid-century style and contemporary design, perfectly suited to the beautiful Northern California landscape.

This complete remodel and understory expansion of a 1950’s ranch house is set on a steep down-sloping site in the Oakland Hills. The objective was to simplify the floor plan, maximize views and expand outdoor and indoor living spaces for entertaining. The central idea was to connect the levels and define spaces with a language of simple geometric volumes and planes. A material palette of dark wood, stained concrete, and blackened metal with stone accents provides a refined modern industrial touch that reflets the homeowner’s casual modern aesthetic
